Coretta Scott King

By:Keri Leonard
Background

Coretta Scott King is an American civil rights activist and the wife of 1960's civil rights leader Martin Luther King. Coretta Scott King was born on April 27,1927 in Perry County, Alabama. Her family were farmers but they were successful than most African American families. She influenced society because she was a leading participant in the American Civil Rights Movement and she developed her life to highest values of human dignity in service to social change. She also traveled around the world speaking out about racial and economic justice, and women and children's rights, gay and lesbian dignity religious freedom ,the needs of the poor and homeless. Also the full-employment,health care, educational opportunities, nuclear disarmament and environmental justice. But I chose Coretta because she wasn't only the wife of a man who believe in non-violence she did too but she had other things in mind not just about African american's rights but others rights as well. She created the Martin Luther King center of non violent social change. She also created MLK birthday into a federal holiday.
